The Importance of Post-Placement Support with Brittney Thompson

Brittney Thompson. Post-Placement Support

Getting a job is just the beginning. Staying employed, growing in confidence, and building a long-term career is where real change happens. That’s why Real Jobs for Mob provides post-placement support and career mentoring through our dedicated Reach Out Officers.

These mentors walk alongside new employees, offering guidance, cultural support, and career advice to ensure a smooth transition into the workforce. Whether it’s helping someone settle into their role, navigate workplace challenges, or plan their next career step, their support makes all the difference.

We sat down with Brittney Thompson, a Reach Out Officer, to talk about why mentoring and post-placement support are essential for long-term success.

Why is post-placement support so important for new employees, especially for First Nations job seekers?

Post-placement support is crucial because it helps bridge the gap between securing a job and long-term success in the workplace. For First Nations job seekers, this support can be even more significant due to cultural differences, possible historical disadvantages, and the importance of community connection.

It ensures the new employee doesn’t feel isolated or unsupported, especially if they are the first person in their family or community to take on a certain role. It helps them adapt, build confidence, and feel that they have someone to turn to when challenges arise.

What are some common challenges that people face after securing a job, and how do you help them navigate these challenges?

Some common challenges include adjusting to the workplace culture, building relationships with colleagues, dealing with workplace stress, and sometimes facing microaggressions or biases.

We provide consistent check-ins and offer mentorship plans and programs that guide individuals through these transitions.

It's about creating a safe space for them to talk about their struggles without fear of judgment.

Additionally, offering skills training (Get ready for Work Programs) can equip them with tools and insights to manage their responsibilities better and overcome challenges.

How does ongoing support help new employees stay in their jobs and feel confident in their roles?

Ongoing support provides employees with a sense of belonging and reassurance that they’re not alone in the workplace. It can be in the form of regular check-ins, peer support groups, or access to professional development resources.

When employees feel supported, they are less likely to leave their jobs due to challenges like feeling overwhelmed or disconnected. Confidence grows as employees see that their employer and support network are invested in their long-term success.

How do you help employees plan their next career steps and work towards promotions or further training?

We encourage employees to have open conversations with their managers about their career aspirations early on. We help them set both short-term and long-term career goals, ensuring that they have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experiences to reach those goals.

This could include providing access to training programs, connecting them with our mentors, or helping them find opportunities for advancement within the organisation.

How does Real Jobs for Mob work with employers to ensure there are pathways for career growth?

Real Jobs for Mob collaborates with employers to ensure they are not only hiring First Nations employees but also providing opportunities for career development and advancement.

We work closely with employers to develop clear career progression pathways, from entry-level positions to more senior roles, and ensure that these pathways are accessible to all employees. This involves setting up mentorship programs, offering skill development workshops, and fostering a workplace culture that values growth and inclusion.

What advice would you give to someone who has just started a new job and is feeling uncertain?

First, recognise that feeling uncertain is completely normal, especially when starting something new. It’s important to be patient with yourself and not expect to know everything right away. Build relationships with your colleagues and seek out mentors who can offer guidance.

Focus on small, achievable goals to build confidence

And remember, it’s okay to ask questions – showing initiative and a willingness to learn is always appreciated. Reach out to your support network, whether that’s family, friends, or colleagues, and let them know how you’re feeling. You’re not alone in this journey.
