Founded on respect

Cultural competence and cultural safety are critical to success when employers are looking to enrich their workplace with First Nations peoples.

Respect – for Culture, histories, values and connections – is what builds pathways to mutual growth, enabling people to move forward and flourish.

Cultural competence and awareness training

Real Futures can provide training in cultural competence and awareness for supervisors, workers and stakeholders to build understanding of Aboriginal practices and protocols that relate directly to your industry.

Our training sessions are the first steps in a long journey of discovery. We endeavour to encourage ongoing learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations. Engagement with the sessions and subsequent learning supports helps free the workplace from discrimination and harassment, promoting the retention of Aboriginal workers and creating an environment where substantial economic and social change can happen.

What is a Culturally Safe workplace?

Cultural Aware staff will promote Cultural Safety in the workplace. People feel safe when everyone, regardless of culture, are treated with respect, inclusion, and transparent management. Cultural respect is the recognition, protection and continued advancement of earned and inherent rights, traditions of a particular culture. Knowledge is shared and practiced so there is an understanding that the cultural norms of a people accessing our services may differ from the dominant culture in the workplace.

A culturally safe workplace is where there is no denial or challenge of one’s Cultural beliefs, traditions or values and genuine partnerships are nurtured. Understanding the impact of historical events on Aboriginal peoples and learning about cultural differences to practice sensitive and effective behaviours will enhance your relationships and provide a better service that meets the needs of Aboriginal peoples, their families and Aboriginal staff.

Committing to Cultural Safety in your workplace will also help you to understand yourself, your values and attitudes that may affect others. The knowledge will make you a better person at work, at home and interacting within your community. Cultural Safety is a fundamental human right.
