In Carnarvon, Real Futures runs an innovative program in partnership with Central Regional TAFE and the Gwoonwardu Mia Cultural Centre.
Jardilunji Mia is a café located inside Gwoonwardu Mia which Real Futures operates as a practical training hub.
Our clients are enrolled in a Certificate II in Hospitality at TAFE, and spend 6-months training, working and studying at Jardilunji Mia under the guidance of the TAFE tutors.
They also have the opportunity to cater local events such as the Gascoyne Food Festival, learn native foraging from elders and gain work experience at Carnarvon cafés.
In the past 18-months, we have welcomed 28 local clients into the program with 72% graduating with their Cert II in Hospitality.
Seven of these graduates moved straight into employment in the hospitality industry and Real Futures has been supporting the others with their next career step.

Mary is a determined single mother, has made a remarkable transition from long-term unemployment to becoming an empowered individual who is inspiring her community.
Mary began her journey with limited proof of identity, which had been a barrier to achieving her goals.
Through the support of the Real Futures Carnarvon team, she successfully obtained her full driver’s license and purchased her first car—a significant milestone!
In July 2024, Mary enrolled in a Certificate II in Hospitality, delivered at our Jardilunji Mia training café in partnership with Central Regional TAFE.
Despite encountering personal family challenges during her study, she persevered with determination.
In November 2024, Mary proudly graduated with her certification and a renewed sense of purpose.
Her hard work was recognised when she won TAFE’s “Most Dedicated Individual” award.
Mary has continued to succeed, using her new skills in a role at Jardilunji Mia Café, where she is also a mentor to the new hospitality students.
Mary’s determination has not only transformed her own life but also demonstrated how challenges can be overcome with the right support and attitude.
